5 BEST THINGS TO DO IN AUSTIN:

1. LIVE MUSIC

If you fly into Austin, you’ll receive your first taste of live music the moment you step off the plane. Yes, live music is available at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Live music can also be at restaurants and pubs, concert venues, and even grocery stores. When you visit the city at night, live music pours out onto the streets from the city’s taverns and clubs. If that isn’t enough, Austin has numerous music festivals. A list of forthcoming events may be seen by clicking here.

2. FRANKLIN BARBECUE

Prepare to wait in queue if you want a taste of this huge BBQ. How long will it take? Five hours or more on weekends. On weekdays, a little less. We only had to get in queue to find out what all the excitement was about. Tim and I arrived around 9 a.m. on Saturday. The line ran around the block and through the parking lot. People sat in fold-out chairs, drank beer, and played games. It felt more like a tailgate party than a barbeque queue.

3. AUSTIN’S SWIMMING HOLES

Cool yourself in one of Austin’s swimming holes throughout the summer. Barton Springs Pool is in Zilker Metropolitan Park in Austin. This huge, natural pool features a diving board and plenty of sun loungers. We’d heard excellent things about Hamilton Pool Preserve, and they only sell a limited number of tickets to keep crowds to a least. They were sold out for the next two weeks at the beginning of June. When the weather is particularly warm, this swimming hole may also close due to excessive bacteria levels. To learn more and to purchase tickets, click here.

4. BATS TAKE TO THE SKY

Every night, millions of bats fly out from beneath the South Congress Bridge and into the sky. We arrived at 8 p.m. and took a location on the south side of the South Congress Bridge. Kayaks and little cruise boats started to arrive on Lady Bird Lake during the following 45 minutes, and the bridge was busy with curious tourists like us. Sunset occurred at 8:30 p.m., and the bats appeared at about 8:50 p.m.

5. GO BAR HOPPING

Austin features various neighbourhoods that are well-known for their late-night scene. Sixth Street has a similar vibe to Bourbon Street in New Orleans. During the late-night hours, it is a route that is popular with college students. Rainey Street is yet another unique Austin neighborhood.

If you don’t want the noisy, dance club ambiance, there are several mellower spots and fantastic eateries nearby. Bangers had the finest sausages we’d ever had and over 100 beers on tap. East Sixth Street is becoming popular. This was to us by Austin natives we met in queue at Franklin Barbecue, but Tim and I were pressed for time and never made it out this way.
